GiddyGang, Vuyo a Band Influenced by J Dilla

GiddyGang is a band-like musical collective based in Oslo, Norway.
With hip-hop at its core, the group blends jazz, soul, R&B, and gospel, creating a live-driven sound strongly influenced by J Dilla and The Roots.

GiddyGang’s beginnings can be traced back to 2019.
According to MUNCH, the group came together through jam sessions at NLA Staffeldtsgate in Oslo, with musicians from different musical backgrounds gradually shaping the sound they have today.
What began as a lo-fi project eventually evolved toward hip-hop and neo-soul performed with a full live-band setup.

One of the members I consider especially important to GiddyGang is rapper Vuyo. He joined the group in 2019 and has continued working with the band ever since.
With his addition, the duller elements of their music naturally faded away, while his rhythmic presence added another layer to the songs and made the overall sound feel more complete.

Another thing that stands out in GiddyGang’s music is the drums and groove.
Rather than simply recreating sample-based beatmaking, the musicians translate the feel of hip-hop beats into a live-band setting, blending it with their backgrounds in gospel, Nordic jazz, and soul.
So rather than sounding like a jazz band playing hip-hop, it feels more like J Dilla-style beat music coming back to life through real musicians playing together.

MUNCH describes GiddyGang not simply as a band, but as a collective that draws from hip-hop, soul, and jazz while addressing both personal experiences and social issues.
It also notes that their music has received positive responses from artists including Robert Glasper, Mac Ayres, and DJ Jazzy Jeff.
More recently, they have expanded beyond music by collaborating with visual artist Tom Ringsby, developing performances that bring music and visual art together.
